Expert Pick of the Week: 2022 Remsen Stakes

Dec 02, 2022 John Mucciolo/TwinSpires.com

A total of seven juveniles will travel 1 1/8 miles in Saturday’s $250,000 Remsen S. (G2) at Aqueduct. The nine-furlong dirt tussle attracted a strong group of two-year-old prospects that can make their presence felt both in the race and going forward into 2023.

Chester and Mary Broman’s homebred Arctic Arrogance is two-for-three in his career, led by a runaway victory in the Sleepy Hollow S. on the surface last time out. The intriguing colt is the Expert Pick of the Week.

Bred in the Empire State, the gray debuted on September 5 at Saratoga and led at every call en route to posting a one-length win over a muddy, sealed surface. The son of Frosted finished second best in a black-type attempt on this strip prior to earning his first stakes victory last time out.

Conditioned by Linda Rice, Arctic Arrogance has shown an abundance of early foot in each of his trio of assignments to date, and I love the way that the youngster closed in his first route attempt most recently when earning a strong 96 Brisnet Late Pace figure. He has trained well in the interim, which includes a bullet five-furlong breeze last weekend, and his pedigree suggests that he will be able to carray his speed another eighth of a mile on Saturday. Jose Lezcano retains the ride.

The John Servis-trained Tuskegee Airmen has been especially sharp in both of his tries to date, led by a facile score in the Rocky Run S. at Delaware last time out. By Street Sense, the $290,000 yearling purchase was a stylish, 5 1/2-length victor on debut on Pennsylvania Derby Day at Parx, and he showed that he was more than capable of handling the one-mile trip in his most recent performance.

Tuskegee Airmen comes in fresh off of the short layoff with a trio of solid morning moves in advance of Saturday, and even slight improvement will give the colt a major chance while making his graded debut for a conditioner who is quite good with running horses off the bench. Luis Saez, who guided the February foal in his first run, will be in the silks.

Expert Pick

An exacta with #4 Arctic Arrogance on top of #2 Tuskegee Airmen in the Remsen Stakes is the Best Bet of the Week.
