How Can I Watch the Kentucky Derby?

May 01, 2016 Jennifer Caldwell/Brisnet.com

The Kentucky Derby is one of the most watched televised sporting events in the United States. In five of the past seven years it has averaged more than 15 million viewers.

But how can someone watch the Kentucky Derby?

Well, CBS began televising the race in 1952 and carried on doing so until ABC took over in 1975.

NBC started their partnership with Churchill Downs in 2001, with Bob Costas and Tom Hammond as the hosts, and has continued in that role to the present time. In fact, NBC Sports Group and Churchill Downs Inc. has signed a multi-year contract that will see the Kentucky Derby remain with the broadcast company through 2025.

That means, if you want to watch the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby, all you have to do is tune into your local NBC broadcast station.

The fun kicks off with the “Access at the Kentucky Derby/Red Carpet Special” at 4 p.m. (ET). The Kentucky Derby coverage continues at 5 p.m. and runs through 7:30 p.m.

The Kentucky Derby undercard will be televised on NBS Sports Network from noon to 4 p.m.

NBS Sports Network will also broadcast the Kentucky Derby Draw on Wednesday, May 4, from 5:30-6 p.m. as well as the Kentucky Oaks from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, May 6.

Now say you’re away from home and want to watch the race on the go instead of setting your DVR. What then?

Well, NBC will also be streaming all the exciting Kentucky Derby events and coverage live on nbcsports.com/live-extra.

Another way of watching the race is on TwinSpires.com, the Official Betting Partner of the Kentucky Derby. All you have to do is sign up with a wagering account, either via the website or by phone (1-877-774-7371), and you’re all set!

TwinSpires account holders can watch races from all over the country, and the world, on their computers, tablets or smart phones simply by logging into their accounts.

So there you have it. Watching the Run for the Roses is easier than ever, either on TV or whichever mobile device you prefer.
