Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Domestic Product

The Klaravich Stables’ Domestic Product earned 50 points on the 2024 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series leaderboard following his neck victory in the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on March 9. Trained by Chad Brown and piloted by Tyler Gaffalione, the winner clocked 1 1/16 miles on the fast main strip in 1:45.47.

Brown said, “He got good seasoning today. He had to rate and he was pulling a little bit off a slow pace, and I was really impressed with his heart and the fact he got his nose down on the wire. I think this race will serve him well moving forward. That’s why I wanted to run him here because he needed a race like this for a little more experience and a little more seasoning.”

No More Time, Grand Mo The First, Good Money, and Heartened rounded out the top five and secured points on a 25-15-10-5 basis.

Domestic Product was unplaced in his debut at Saratoga in the summer when running six furlongs, but the son of Practical Joke took a big step forward when graduating second time out at Aqueduct at the nine-furlong trip on Oct. 27. He concluded his two-year-old campaign with a seventh-place result in the Remsen S. (G2) on Dec. 2. The dark bay rallied for a second-place finish in the Holy Bull S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 3 to commence 2024. His lifetime line now reads 5-2-1-0, with earnings at $314,200.

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State and is the first black-type star produced from the unraced Paynter mare Good and Services. He hails from the same female line as Grade 3 heroine Cherokee Queen.

Domestic Product has registered Brisnet Speed numbers of 87-80-91-84 in his four outings since stretching out in distance. While he has to get much faster to compete with the upper echelon of sophomores in his division, his last pair of Late Pace ratings of 108 and 125 are especially encouraging, and it seems like the farther he runs, the better.

The next stop for Domestic Product has yet to be determined, although his conditioner indicated that he will likely have one more prep race prior to an anticipated start in the Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs on May 4.
