Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Society Man

West Paces Racing, LLC, conditioner Danny Gargan, and GMP Stables, LLC’s Society Man has earned 50 qualifying points on the 2024 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series leaderboard and currently sits in 17th place in the standings. The three-year-old gelding was last seen finishing a clear second in the $750,000 Wood Memorial S. (G2) at Aqueduct on April 6 in his second graded stakes attempt.

'What a race he ran. I was super proud of him, and I thought for a minute he was going to get there,” Gargan said. “He's learning and getting better, and obviously we're going to look at the Derby with him. We couldn't be more excited.”

Society Man made his first appearance at Saratoga in the summer and was unplaced in a six-furlong maiden special weight dash on July 22. Stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for his second run, the chestnut showed nice improvement while checking in third at Aqueduct on Dec. 8. An eighth-place result in the Withers S. (G3) kicked off his sophomore campaign, and he preceded his Wood effort with a maiden victory at Aqueduct on March 9. His lifetime line now reads 5-1-1-1, $196,705.

Society Man was bred in the Bluegrass State by SF Bloodstock and attracted a closing bid of $85,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is the first black-type horse produced from the stakes placed Colonel John mare You Cheated. The son of Good Magic hails from the same female line as Grade 2 heroine Bay Storm, as well as Grade 3 victor Utopian.

Society Man shows improving Brisnet Speed figures of 77-85-102 from his trio of outings in 2024. He is a difficult read as his last display far exceeded his previous performances, but the sophomore still ran a very good race in the Wood and any improvement off of that showing will give him a top-four chance at huge odds beneath the Twin Spires on May 4.
