Kentucky Derby Horse Profile: Deterministic

Ken Langone, Stephen Dunker, Vicarage Stable, and St Elias Stable’s Deterministic earned 50 qualifying points on the 2024 Road to the Kentucky Derby, following his impressive two-length tally in the $300,000 Gotham S. (G3) at Aqueduct on March 2. Conditioned by Christophe Clement and piloted by Joel Rosario, the winner clocked eight furlongs over the sloppy, sealed main surface in 1:36.37.

“He was very impressive. He confirmed what we believed all along that he’s top class. His works have been top class, as well as his win at Saratoga. He validated it all today,” said Miguel Clement, the assistant to his father, Christophe Clement.

Just A Touch was second, followed by El Grande O, Maximus Meridius, and Capital Idea, who earned Derby points on a 25-15-10-5 structure.

Deterministic was unveiled at Saratoga on August 12 in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race and rallied from well off of the early tempo to register a half-length victory beneath Rosario. Following his Gotham score, the dark bay colt improved his lifetime line to 2-2-0-0, with a lifetime earnings of $222,750.

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State by Hinkle Farms and brought the gavel down at $625,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The son of Liam’s Map is the first black-type performer produced from the winning Speightstown mare Giulio’s Jewel. He hails from the same female line as 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner and sire Bayern.

Deterministic has posted Brisnet Speed figures of 90 and 99 from a pair of career attempts to date, which include Late Pace numbers of 95 and 98. He has yet to travel two turns, but his pedigree and running style suggest that he will move forward as the distances increase this season. The three-year-old is a first-rate prospect, in my opinion, and will only improve with additional seasoning.

A decision as to where the exciting sophomore will race next is yet to be determined.
