Mohaymen stays undefeated in Remsen

Nov 28, 2015 by Vance Hanson

Mohaymen will enter the winter as one of the top favorites for the 2016 Kentucky Derby (G1) after an impressive victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct.

The 3-2 favorite in the nine-furlong test, Mohaymen saved ground most of the way, split rivals in the stretch and wore down Flexibility with an inside rush to score by 1 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:50.69 over a fast track.

Owned by Shadwell Stable and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Mohaymen was ridden by Junior Alvarado and paid $5.10. He earned 10 qualifying points toward next year’s Kentucky Derby.

Mohaymen, a son of Tapit, is now undefeated in three starts. A half-length winner of his debut at Belmont September 19, he followed up with a 1 3/4-length win over Flexibility in the one-mile Nashua (G2) at Aqueduct November 4.

Flexibility again garnered place honors in the Remsen, with Gift Box third and Sail Ahoy fourth.

A $2.2 million yearling purchase, Mohaymen was produced by multiple Grade 2 winner Justwhistledixie and is a half-brother to 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner New Year’s Day.
