Society Man’s runner-up spot in the Wood Memorial (G2) gives Dornoch’s trainer Danny Gargan a second runner in the 2024 Kentucky Derby – this time with a horse he part-owns.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, Society Man was an $85,000 buy at the Keeneland September yearling sale. He is raced by Gargan, West Paces Racing LLC, and GMP Stables LLC.

Like Dornoch, Society Man is by the exciting sire Good Magic, runner-up in the 2018 Kentucky Derby to Triple Crown winner Justify and sire of last year’s Derby winner Mage. Society Man’s dam You Cheated, a stakes-placed daughter of Colonel John, is from the family of stakes winners Stormy Regatta, Bay Storm, Storm Alert, and Utopian.

Good Magic has already proved his ability to get a 1 1/4-mile winner and with names in his distaff pedigree like Tiznow and A.P. Indy, Society Man should be the requisite Derby stamina. The question is whether he has the class.
